Multicultural Program Management: How the Public and Private Sectors Can Learn from One Another
Although the drivers and performance metrics
for program management (PM) in the government
and private industry are different, the
desired results are the same. Program managers
(PMs) want their projects to be successful,
whatever their definitions of success may
be. As such, government and private industry
program managers can gain insight and
potentially new ways of doing things by learning
about each other’s PM approaches.
In spite of their different paths, public and private
sector PM has one overarching commonality:
the need to do more with less. Because
of today’s economic landscape—and it
doesn’t look like it will return to former levels
anytime soon—fewer people are employed to
do the work that needs to be done. Tight
resources typically mean tighter deadlines,
making the visibility and proactivity that PM
engenders economically imperative. And it
should be noted that at least on the surface,
the “language” of PM, as far as its terms and
definitions, is universal across government
and industry.
