Robbins-Gioia Supports NYPD Technology Modernization Efforts

NYPD Recognizes Robbins-Gioia Support

January 13, 2003, Alexandria, VA-To assist the New York Police Department reach its technology objectives, Robbins-Gioia, LLC, the leading provider of project management services, is offering its expertise on a pro bono basis.

Initially, representatives from several prominent companies, including one of Robbins-Gioia's customers, offered pro bono assistance to the NYPD in its technology initiatives, including a technology assessment. The agency has strong support in this area from Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Commissioner Raymond Kelly. Robbins-Gioia offered its services to the NYPD, and, after acceptance, performed an assessment of the NYPD's readiness to set up a PMO. As a next step, Robbins-Gioia created a PMO implementation plan. "These activities helped the NYPD identify requirements, map the implementation, and forecast benefits specifically related to their modernization efforts," said Salvatore Gioia, vice president of Robbins-Gioia's New York office.

Another NYPD initiative is the new Computer- Aided Dispatch (or CAD) emergency dispatch system. The NYPD awarded HP the contract to install the software, but required a third-party program manager to oversee the project. In partnership with another company, Andrew Anderson, Robbins-Gioia's vice president of operations, helped the NYPD set up interview parameters for the independent CAD program manager. Robbins-Gioia developed a process to gauge candidates' technical and management skills and categorize and down select candidates. Robbins-Gioia also served on the interview committee. "We were able to provide best practices related to screening candidates for this important role," said Anderson. "Too often, decisions are based on personalities and politics. The NYPD, committed to this initiative, recognized the importance of creating an objective, structured process."
NYPD Deputy Chief John Gilmartin added, "Our appreciation for Robbins-Gioia's high level of expertise, excellent management skills, and invaluable advice cannot be overstated."

During a recent luncheon honoring the companies who helped the New York Police Department with its IT initiatives, NYPD representatives recognized Robbins-Gioia. Merrill Lynch, IBM, and Deloitte were also recognized. Deputy Chief John Gilmartin presented Anderson, Sal Gioia, and John Gioia, chairman of the board of Robbins-Gioia, with certificates recognizing their "exceptional contributions, dedication and most of all . . . friendship."
